Giovanni IV il Digiunatore Patriarca di Costantinopoli

Troparion — Tone 4

O God of our Fathers, / always act with kindness towards us; / take not Your mercy from us, / but guide our lives in peace / through the prayers of the Patriarchs Alexander, John, and Paul.

Kontakion — Tone 8

Set aflame by the love of Christ, O glorious ones, / you took up the yoke of His precious Cross revealing yourselves as followers in His footsteps by your way of life, / and you became partakers of His divine glory, / divinely-wise Alexander, with wonderful John and glorious Paul. / As you stand before His throne, earnestly pray for our souls

Saint ALEXANDRE, patriarche de Constantinople (314-337), un des Pères du Ier Concile oecuménique (337). (Office traduit en français par le père Denis Guillaume au tome VIII des Ménées.)

St. Alexander was a bishop during the time of Patriarch Metrophanes.  He attended the Ecumenical Council at Nicea representing the patriarch in 325.  Patriarch Metrophanes chose St. Alexander to follow him as patriarch of Constantinople upon his death.  Once during a dispute with a pagan, St. Alexander exclaimed, "In the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ I command you to be quiet!" and the man became mute.  Only after making motions indicating that he believed in the True Faith was his voice restored.  The heretic Arius was punished through the prayers if St. Alexander.  Arius deceived St. Constantine into setting a date for him to be received into the Church.  St. Alexander, knowning that Arius was a deceiver and a heretic, prayed that this would not happen.  On the day Arius was to be received, his bowels burst and he died. St. Alexander died in the year 340 at the age of 98.

Troparion (Tone 3)Initiates of Heaven and teachers of divine truth, you faithfully tended the Church of Christ, Holy Alexander champion of the Trinity, John the son of grace and Paul the crown of bishops.  Together we all praise you.

Troparion — Tone 4

O God of our Fathers, / always act with kindness towards us; / take not Your mercy from us, / but guide our lives in peace / through the prayers of the Patriarchs Alexander, John, and Paul.

Troparion — Tone 4

(Special Melody "Go quickly before")

Christ, the God Who is over all, / has proclaimed you as a venerable shepherd of His Church, O godly-minded Alexander, / a light upon a candlestand, a faithful steward, / a pillar of Orthodoxy, and a most pious example. / Therefore, we rejoice in your memory.

As you stand before His throne, earnestly pray for our souls.
