Prince Deiniol the Blessed was a saintly man who appears to have already established himself in Gwynedd in the early 6th century, long before his father, King Dunaut of the Northern Pennines' defeat and expulsion from Dunoting. Deiniol settled in Bangor Fawr on the Menai Straits where King Maelgwn of Gwynedd gave him lands to establish a monastic Cathedral. He later refounded the monastery at Bangor-Is-y-Coed (upon Dee) under the patronage of his uncle, King Brochfael Ysgythrog (of the Tusks) of Powys. Deiniol's aging father may have become Abbot here. Deiniol attended the Synod of Llandewi Brefi where he was consecrated Bishop of Bangor (Fawr) by St. Dewi (David) himself. Upon his return, he is said to have founded churches at Llandeiniol in Dyfed and Llanfor and Llanuwchllyn near Llyn Tegid (Lake Bala). Though he died at Bangor Fawr on 11th September 584, his body was taken to Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island) to be buried. The Cathedral at Bangor (Fawr) is still dedicated to him today.
Figlio di un Re e discendente di Coel Godeborg, secondo la Legenda novem lectionum de S. Daniele, episcopo Bangorensi, viene ricordato come il fondatore del Monastero di Bangor Fawr (Monastero gallese, da non confondere coll’omonimo Monastero irlandese. Secondo una fonte, fondò due Monasteri omonimi: oltre a Bangor Fawr, su terre donate da Re Maelgwn di Gwynedd anche a Bangor-Is-y-Coed (upon Dee), fondazione patrocinata da suo zio, Re Brochfael Yagythrog - qui poté divenire Abate il suo vecchio padre - che secondo Beda era il più famoso Monastero della Chiesa britannica.
Discepolo di S. Cadoc a Llancanfarn, da questi ricevette il compito di fondare il Monastero, divenendo il primo Vescovo della zona (Bangor Fawr, oggi Gwynedd). Consacrato Vescovo da S. Dubricio o da S. Davide, fu inviato in Gallia a contrastare il pelagianesimo. Nel 545 prese parte con San Davide e San Dyfrig ad un Sinodo (Llandewi Brefi) in cui presero varie decisioni in materia penitenziale. Compì molti miracoli a testimonianza della sua santità e fondò altre chiese: a Llandeiniol, Dyfed; a Llanfor e Llanuwchllyn presso Llyn Tegid (Lac Bala).
Morì verso il 584 (secondo gli Annales Cambriae del XII secolo, mentre altri pongono la morte nel 544 o nel 554. Oggi però anche il 584 sembra troppo antica come data). Sepolto a Ynya Ynlli (Bardsey Island), ebbe un culto molto diffuso nel Galles del Nord, dove gli furono dedicate molte chiese e qualcuna anche nel Sud.
